Description
Posteriorly, the female axial skeleton is presented with the cervical spine highlighted in blue from the occiput down to the cervicothoracic junction. The atlas (C1) sits immediately inferior to the skull base, the axis (C2) lies just caudal to it, and the remaining cervical vertebrae (C3 to C7) stack inferiorly toward T1, with their spinous processes projecting along the midline. Lateral to the midline, the cervical transverse processes and articular pillars align medial to the scapulae and proximal humeri, while the rib cage and thoracolumbar spine provide an uncolored reference framework. A posterior emphasis helps clarify the bony landmarks used every day in examination and intervention: the palpable C7 vertebra prominens, the midline spinous processes, and the segmental spacing that guides surface localization. This is the view you want when teaching mechanisms of whiplash injury and extension related facet (zygapophysial) joint pain, because posterior element loading correlates with tenderness patterns and with the targets for medial branch blocks and radiofrequency ablation. It also supports orientation for posterior cervical approaches, including laminectomy or laminoplasty, where the laminae and spinous processes define the corridor and the level count must be unambiguous.
