Description
Anterior cervical anatomy is centered on the hyoid bone suspended superior to the laryngeal framework, with the body and greater cornua sitting just inferior to the mandible and anterior to the upper cervical vertebrae. Inferior to the hyoid, the thyroid cartilage forms the prominent anterior wall of the larynx, its laminae meeting in the midline and sitting anterior to the laryngeal inlet and prevertebral region. The upper trachea continues inferiorly in the midline beneath the cricoid level, while the cervical vertebrae (upper segments of the vertebral column) lie posterior, separated from the airway by prevertebral soft tissues. Midline relationships are clear. Depth is readable at a glance. For teaching and clinical correlation, this arrangement matters because the hyoid, thyroid cartilage, and upper trachea are palpable landmarks that guide airway assessment and front-of-neck access when visualization is poor. Thyroid cartilage position relative to the trachea helps orient cricothyrotomy planning (through the cricothyroid membrane between thyroid and cricoid cartilages) and clarifies why laryngeal trauma can compromise the airway even without obvious external injury. Dysphagia workups also start here: the hyoid’s elevation during swallowing and its muscular attachments explain bolus protection mechanics at the laryngeal inlet.
