Veins of the Head

Description

Arising from the cortical surface, superficial cerebral veins course over the gyri and along the sulci to reach the dural venous sinuses, with larger collectors tracking toward the superior sagittal sinus at the midline and the transverse sinuses posterolaterally. Deep venous drainage converges toward the great cerebral vein (of Galen) and straight sinus, positioned posterior to the third ventricle region and inferior to the splenium of the corpus callosum in standard anatomic orientation. Inferiorly, venous outflow continues toward the sigmoid sinus and internal jugular vein at the jugular foramen, while superficial extracranial channels would logically include the superficial temporal and facial veins draining inferiorly toward the internal jugular system. Color coding separates neural tissue, cranial nerves, and venous channels. Fast identification. Venous anatomy in the head becomes clinically visible when it fails. Bridging veins traversing the subdural space between cerebral cortex and superior sagittal sinus are the classic source of subdural hematoma after acceleration injury, and their relationship to the falx cerebri is easier to teach when the sagittal sinus is clearly mapped. Thrombosis of the dural venous sinuses, including the superior sagittal and transverse sinuses, can present with headache, papilledema, and venous infarction that does not respect arterial territories, so a clear venous drainage pattern matters when correlating symptoms with MR venography. Neuroanatomy, head and neck anatomy, and clinical neuroscience courses will use this plate to reinforce venous drainage pathways alongside cranial nerve topography and the brainstem to spinal cord continuum. It also fits well in neurosurgical and neuroradiology teaching files when discussing venous sinus thrombosis, subdural collections, and jugular outflow obstruction.
