Corrugator Supercilii

Description

Angled in a front left oblique perspective, the facial musculature is rendered with the corrugator supercilii highlighted superior to the medial orbital rim, deep to the frontalis and immediately adjacent to the glabella. Its short fibers course superolaterally from the medial end of the superciliary arch toward the skin of the medial eyebrow, where it interdigitates with frontalis and orbicularis oculi. Orbicularis oculi encircles the palpebral fissure anteriorly, while nasal muscles occupy the midline inferior to the root of the nose. Neck anatomy remains in frame, with the sternocleidomastoid running inferolaterally from mastoid region toward the sternum and clavicle. Corrugator supercilii matters because it is the primary driver of vertical glabellar rhytids, the frown lines targeted in aesthetic botulinum toxin injection and corrugator myectomy. Small changes in injection depth or position can diffuse into levator palpebrae superioris through the orbital septum region and present clinically as upper eyelid ptosis. Clear depiction of its relationship to orbicularis oculi and frontalis also supports teaching the antagonistic balance between brow depression and elevation. A small muscle, big consequences.
