Viewed from the left lateral aspect, the cranial dura mater (pachymeninx) forms a tough sleeve lining the calvaria and draping around the cerebral hemispheres, then reflecting inferiorly toward the tentorium cerebelli and the margins of the posterior cranial fossa. Along the inferior contour, the dura continues onto the brainstem at the foramen magnum, where it becomes continuous with spinal dura. A small, yellow cranial nerve element emerges near the ventrolateral brainstem, consistent with a root or segment traversing the cerebellopontine angle region toward a dural opening. Orientation is clear. Superior is toward the parietal vault, anterior toward the frontal pole, posterior toward the occipital pole. This lateral presentation is the one you want when teaching dural reflections and the way the dura relates to venous sinus pathways and cranial nerve exit points, even when cortical gyrification is simplified to keep attention on the meningeal envelope. Surgeons rely on these relationships during a retrosigmoid approach for vestibular schwannoma, where the dura over the posterior petrous surface is opened near the sigmoid and transverse sinus junction and cranial nerves VII and VIII are encountered deep to the dural margin. Dural pain sensitivity also makes this anatomy clinically tangible, meningeal irritation and subdural hematoma occupy the potential space between dura and arachnoid, and middle meningeal artery injury after temporal bone trauma produces an epidural hematoma that dissects the dura off the inner table. Use this asset in gross anatomy and neuroanatomy courses to anchor the concept of dura as a periosteal and meningeal layer with specific reflections, and in neurosurgery, ENT, or radiology teaching files when explaining lateral skull base corridors and meningeal spaces.
