Description
Superiorly, the cranial dura mater is presented as the pachymeninx lining the calvaria, with the falx cerebri forming a sickle-shaped vertical dural fold in the median plane between the left and right cerebral hemispheres. The longitudinal fissure lies directly deep to the falx, and the dural reflections sit medial to the convexity surfaces of the cerebral hemispheres. Along the superior attachment, the falx would be continuous with the dural roof of the superior sagittal sinus at the midline, even if a stylized model softens that groove. Midline anatomy, clarified. This perspective matters when you need to teach or plan around dural partitions and venous sinuses rather than cortical gyri. A superior approach is the clearest way to orient the falx cerebri relative to the sagittal plane and to understand why parasagittal pathology can present with venous complications, such as superior sagittal sinus thrombosis or hemorrhage from bridging veins producing a subdural hematoma. It also frames the operative corridor for parasagittal craniotomy and falx-adjacent meningiomas, where the surgeon balances tumor resection against preservation of the superior sagittal sinus and cortical draining veins. Use this asset for neuroanatomy and head and neck modules covering meninges and dural reflections, and for neurosurgery or neuroradiology teaching materials that need a clean superior orientation without distracting surface detail. It also suits atlases, exam prep figures, and patient education sheets introducing the dura mater and falx cerebri as midline landmarks.
