Description
Running along the lateral aspect of the male lower leg, the crural fascia (deep fascia of the leg) forms a dense investing sheath superficial to the muscle bellies and continuous proximally with the fascia lata. Anteriorly it overlies the extensor compartment and tracks toward the anterior border of the tibia, while posteriorly it blends over the fibular (peroneal) region and the posterior compartment above the gastrocnemius and soleus. Laterally, the fascia relates closely to the fibula and the lateral intermuscular septum, defining the boundary between the anterior and lateral compartments as it descends toward the ankle. Clear compartmental planes. Compartment anatomy is not an academic detail here, it governs how swelling behaves after trauma and where pain localizes in acute compartment syndrome of the leg. The lateral view highlights the fibular (lateral) compartment, a common site of exertional compartment syndrome affecting the fibularis longus and brevis, and it supports teaching of safe fasciotomy placement, avoiding the superficial fibular nerve as it becomes subcutaneous in the distal third of the leg. Orthopedic approaches to the fibula and ankle also depend on understanding how the crural fascia tightens into the superior and inferior fibular retinacula, constraining the peroneal tendons behind the lateral malleolus.
