Description
Prominent in this cervical spine rendering, the C7 vertebra (vertebra prominens) stands out by its long, non-bifid spinous process projecting posteriorly at the cervicothoracic junction, inferior to C6 and superior to T1. The vertebral body lies anterior to the vertebral canal, while paired pedicles and laminae form the vertebral arch that surrounds the canal where the spinal cord would course. Laterally, the transverse processes extend from the vertebral arch toward the posterolateral neck, and the superior and inferior articular processes bracket the zygapophysial joints with adjacent vertebrae. Palpation of the C7 spinous process is a routine surface landmark at the base of the neck, but clinicians often confirm it because C6 can be more prominent in some individuals, a detail that matters when counting levels for cervical radiographs or procedure planning. The cervicothoracic transition is also a common site for degenerative change, and C7 to T1 disc pathology can produce C8 radiculopathy, a pattern that helps differentiate symptoms from the more common C6 or C7 nerve root involvement.
