Description
Rendered within a translucent male torso, the spleen is isolated in dark contrast in the left hypochondriac region, deep to the left costal margin and tucked under ribs 9 to 11. Its diaphragmatic surface faces superolaterally toward the left hemidiaphragm, while the visceral surface sits more inferomedially where it would relate to the fundus of the stomach and the superior pole of the left kidney. Subtle notching along the superior border is visible, a classic gross landmark that helps orient the superior pole and anterior margin. Vertebral bodies run in the midline posteriorly, with the rib cage arching laterally to frame the organ. Spatial context is the point of this plate. The spleen’s protected position beneath the lower left ribs explains why left lower rib fractures can lacerate splenic parenchyma and precipitate hemoperitoneum, and why the left upper quadrant exam and FAST ultrasound focus around Morison’s pouch and the splenorenal recess when trauma is suspected. Those superior border indentations also matter in palpation teaching, since an enlarged spleen (for example in portal hypertension, hematologic malignancy, or infectious mononucleosis) may present with a palpable, notched edge as it migrates inferomedially with inspiration. A small organ, big consequences.
