Habenula sits on the dorsomedial aspect of the diencephalon, forming a small prominence of the epithalamus immediately superior to the midbrain tectum in this lateral perspective. The habenular nucleus appears adjacent to the roof of the third ventricle and posterior to the thalamus, with the pineal gland positioned just posterior and slightly inferior in the pineal recess region. Superior and anterior to the pineal area, the stria medullaris thalami can be inferred as the afferent fiber tract converging toward the habenula along the dorsomedial thalamic margin, while the habenular commissure and posterior commissure lie near the midline at the junction of epithalamus and midbrain.
