Interventricular foramen (foramen of Monro) appears as a short, slit-like channel at the anteromedial roof of the third ventricle, linking it to the anterior portion of the lateral ventricle in a fixed lateral perspective. Superiorly and anteriorly, the column of the fornix forms a key boundary, while the thalamus contributes to the posterior margin where the third ventricle begins. The head of the caudate nucleus lies lateral to the ventricular cavity, and the septum pellucidum is positioned medially along the lateral ventricle near the midline. CSF exits here. Obstruction at the foramen of Monro produces a characteristic pattern of ventricular enlargement, often with asymmetric dilatation of a single lateral ventricle, so the precise geometry of this narrow opening matters when teaching hydrocephalus mechanics.
