Description
Anterior abdominal anatomy is rendered with the small intestine reflected into multiple loops so the mesentery and its vessels can be followed from their proximal origins to the bowel wall. Jejunal and ileal arteries branch from the superior mesenteric artery and course inferiorly and laterally within the mesentery, forming successive arterial arcades before giving rise to straight vasa recta that approach the jejunum and ileum along their mesenteric border. Surrounding context includes the liver and stomach superiorly, the colon framing the periphery of the abdominal cavity, and the partially visible rib cage and bony pelvis providing topographic landmarks; accompanying mesenteric veins track alongside the arteries. Arcade patterns and vasa recta length are practical discriminators between jejunum and ileum, and this view makes that comparison easy to teach. Surgeons and interventionalists rely on these branching relationships when planning small bowel resection, mesenteric angiography, or embolization, where preserving marginal perfusion can prevent postoperative ischemia and anastomotic failure. Acute mesenteric ischemia from superior mesenteric artery embolus or thrombosis also localizes to these territories, and the density of arcades helps explain why some segments tolerate proximal compromise better than others. Collateral routes matter.
