Description
Running along the lateral aspect of the ankle, the lateral malleolar vein tracks just posterior and inferior to the lateral malleolus of the fibula before curving toward the dorsolateral foot. The fibula lies lateral to the tibia in the distal leg, and the calcaneus sits inferior and posterior as the vein courses superficially over the tarsal region. A network of companion superficial veins crosses the dorsum of the foot, while arterial pathways are rendered deeper and more anterior, reinforcing the typical superficial venous pattern around the malleoli. Spatially, this is the transition zone between the distal leg and the hindfoot. A lateral view at the malleolus matters because the superficial venous channels here are common sites of trauma-related bleeding and iatrogenic injury, and they form tributaries that communicate with the lateral marginal vein and the small saphenous system. Surface anatomy is tight. The close relationship to the fibular malleolus also makes this region relevant when teaching venous return during ankle motion, where repetitive friction, local edema, or an ill-fitting brace can aggravate superficial thrombophlebitis and varicosities along the lateral hindfoot.
