Description
Running along the lateral plantar foot, the lateral band of the plantar aponeurosis is traced from its proximal attachment at the medial process of the calcaneal tuberosity toward its distal fibers adjacent to the fifth metatarsal. From a lateral view, its thin outer margin sits superficial to the plantar intrinsic compartment and inferior to the lateral plantar musculature, blending anteriorly with the plantar fibrous sheaths and the fascia overlying the abductor digiti minimi. Posteriorly it relates to the fat pad and calcaneal periosteum, while distally it approaches the lateral forefoot where the aponeurotic fibers tether skin and support the metatarsal heads. This lateral perspective matters when you need to distinguish plantar aponeurosis pathology from lateral column pain sources, because the lateral band can be the symptomatic structure in lateral plantar fasciopathy and in some cases of calcaneal stress injury where focal tenderness sits closer to the lateral calcaneal tubercle.
