Description
Cribriform foramina perforate the cribriform plate of the ethmoid bone in a dense, sieve-like field positioned in the midline anterior cranial fossa. Medially, the crista galli rises superiorly as a sharp vertical crest, while the perforations occupy the horizontal plate on either side, separated by a subtle midline ridge where the falx cerebri attaches. Inferior to the plate lies the roof of the nasal cavity, with the superior nasal septum continuous with the perpendicular plate of the ethmoid and the lateral margins approaching the ethmoidal labyrinth. Small openings matter here. Olfactory nerve filaments (CN I) traverse these cribriform foramina from the olfactory mucosa to the olfactory bulb, so the density and distribution of perforations help learners link nasal cavity topography to anterior skull base neuroanatomy. In trauma, fractures through the cribriform plate can shear olfactory fila and disrupt the meningeal barrier, producing anosmia and cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea, a pattern that often localizes to this thin bony region. For endoscopic sinus surgery and anterior skull base approaches, the cribriform plate, crista galli, and adjacent fovea ethmoidalis form a narrow surgical corridor where a few millimeters determine whether dissection stays within the ethmoid roof or enters the intracranial compartment; the fixed perspective supports side-by-side comparison with CT of the anterior cranial fossa and coronal sinus imaging.
