Description

Arising at the anterior cranial base, the ethmoid bone is isolated in blue within an otherwise intact male skull, with the crista galli projecting superiorly in the midline from the cribriform plate. Inferior to this horizontal plate, the perpendicular plate descends to form the superior portion of the nasal septum, while the paired labyrinths extend laterally between the nasal cavity and the orbits. Along the medial orbital walls, the lamina papyracea lies lateral to the superior and middle nasal conchae, and the ethmoidal air cells occupy the space between them. Orientation to ethmoid morphology matters because this single bone links the anterior cranial fossa, sinonasal cavity, and orbit across paper-thin partitions. A clear read on the cribriform plate and crista galli supports discussions of cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea after anterior skull base trauma or endoscopic sinus surgery, where disruption near the olfactory foramina can create a leak and anosmia.
