Description
Arising as the anterior roof of the orbit and the anterior cranial vault, the frontal bone is presented from a superior perspective with its internal (endocranial) surface oriented toward the viewer, forming the anterior cranial fossa. Medially, the frontal crest and the adjacent sagittal sulcus guide toward the region where the falx cerebri attaches, while laterally the orbital plates sweep inferiorly to form the fossa for the frontal lobes. Posteriorly, the frontal bone meets the parietal bones at the coronal suture region, and anteriorly its thickness increases toward the frontal squama. Clean landmarks. Reading the endocranial surface matters because it is the bony footprint of the frontal lobes and the anterior cranial base, the zone scrutinized in basilar skull trauma and anterior cranial fossa fractures.
