Description
Anterior cranial anatomy is presented with emphasis on the frontal bone and its relationship to adjacent facial and neurocranial structures in a partially sectioned male skull. Superior to the orbits, the squama frontalis forms the forehead, while the supraorbital margins define the superior orbital rim and transition medially toward the glabella and nasion at the frontonasal junction. Laterally, the frontal bone meets the zygomatic bone at the frontozygomatic suture, and posteriorly it contributes to the anterior cranial fossa as the calvaria is cut away to expose the endocranial space. A semi-transparent brain occupies the cranial cavity, and the craniovertebral junction continues inferiorly into the upper cervical vertebrae. For teaching and clinical correlation, this cutaway makes the frontal bone more than an external landmark, it frames the volume of the anterior cranial vault and the space directly behind the forehead. Frontal sinus trauma and anterior table fractures are evaluated by considering the thickness and contour of the frontal bone and the proximity to the anterior cranial fossa and dura, while supraorbital margin anatomy guides the location of the supraorbital notch or foramen during regional anesthesia of the supraorbital nerve.
