Description
Oriented to a superior view of the occipital bone in an adult male skull, the endocranial surface is centered on the foramen magnum, with the clivus (basilar part) extending anteriorly and the squamous part expanding posteriorly toward the internal occipital protuberance. Superiorly, the cerebral fossae lie above the transverse sulci, while the cerebellar fossae sit inferior to them, divided by the internal occipital crest. Laterally, the occipital condyles flank the foramen magnum, and the jugular processes approach the jugular foramina at the petro-occipital region. Fine suture margins are indicated where the occipital bone meets the parietals at the lambdoid suture and the temporals at the occipitomastoid suture. For teaching and clinical correlation, the endocranial grooves matter because they map venous drainage and dural attachment sites, with the transverse sulci accommodating the transverse sinuses and the internal occipital crest marking the attachment of the falx cerebelli. A clear read on the foramen magnum region supports discussions of Chiari I malformation and posterior fossa decompression, where bony removal at the suboccipital squama and margins of the foramen magnum must respect nearby dural sinuses. Bone landmarks also guide interpretation of basilar invagination and occipital condyle fractures in trauma. Landmarks decide the approach. Use this plate in gross anatomy and neuroanatomy courses when correlating cranial fossae with cerebellar and occipital lobe positioning, and in radiology or neurosurgical teaching files when annotating CT of the posterior cranial fossa and craniocervical junction.
