Description
Centrally positioned within an inferior view of the male cranial base, the sphenoid bone is isolated in blue, spanning the midline between the temporal bones and articulating anteriorly with the ethmoid and frontal bones. The body of the sphenoid sits medial to the greater wings, with the lesser wings projecting anterosuperiorly toward the orbital roofs; laterally, the greater wings extend toward the squamous temporal and parietal regions. Posterior to the sphenoid, the occipital bone forms the margins of the foramen magnum, while the petrous parts of the temporal bones lie posterolateral, contributing to the boundaries of adjacent foramina. Osseous texture is kept natural outside the highlight for rapid orientation. An inferior cranial base perspective is where the sphenoid earns its reputation as a keystone, because its foramina and ridges set the route map for neurovascular traffic leaving the cranial cavity. Foramen ovale and foramen spinosum, typically visible in the greater wing, relate directly to V3 and the middle meningeal artery, a pairing that matters in epidural hematoma patterns and in percutaneous trigeminal procedures that target the foramen ovale. Small openings matter. Even subtle spatial relationships between the sphenoid, petrous temporal bone, and the margin of the foramen magnum help learners understand why skull base surgery and trauma assessment are taught by foramina rather than by sutures. Use this illustration in gross anatomy and neuroanatomy courses to teach cranial base landmarks, foraminal contents, and bone-to-bone orientation on the underside of the skull.
