Presented from an inferior perspective into the cranial cavity, the calvaria has been removed to expose the internal base of skull, including the occipital bone surrounding the foramen magnum, the petrous parts of the temporal bones laterally, and the centrally placed sphenoid with its body and greater wings. Anteriorly, the orbital plates of the frontal bone form the roof of the orbits and the anterior cranial fossa, meeting the lesser wings of the sphenoid at the sphenoidal ridge. Multiple foramina are visible in situ, including the jugular foramen and hypoglossal canal posterolaterally, and the foramina ovale and spinosum in the greater wing, aligned anteromedial to the petrous apex. A blue-highlighted region marks a selected bony area for emphasis. Skull base anatomy matters because small changes in foraminal margins, bony ridges, and canal orientation translate directly into neurovascular risk during trauma and surgery. Basilar skull fractures commonly track through the temporal bone and sphenoid, and knowing the relationships between the petrous temporal bone, carotid canal region, and jugular foramen helps explain associated cranial neuropathies and vascular injury patterns. This view also supports teaching of the anterior, middle, and posterior cranial fossae as functional compartments rather than abstract labels. Landmarks are unforgiving. Use this asset in neuroanatomy and head and neck anatomy courses, in operative atlas figures for endoscopic skull base or lateral skull base approaches, and in radiology teaching files when correlating CT bone windows with foramina and canals.
