Description
Running along the posterolateral thigh, the long head of the biceps femoris is shown arising proximally from the ischial tuberosity and coursing inferiorly toward the lateral aspect of the knee. Distally, its muscle belly narrows into a tendon that approaches the fibular head, with the short head joining it in the distal third of the femur near the linea aspera and lateral supracondylar line. A lateral side view naturally situates the biceps femoris superficial to the posterior femur, posterior to the vastus lateralis region, and lateral to the semitendinosus and semimembranosus as they descend medially. For teaching and clinical correlation, this perspective emphasizes the long head’s biarticular path across both hip and knee, which is why it is frequently injured during sprinting and terminal swing when the hamstrings eccentrically decelerate knee extension while the hip remains flexed.
