Description
Running distally along the posteromedial leg, the posterior tibial artery is shown continuing from the popliteal artery after the bifurcation of the tibial trunk, descending deep to the soleus and then coursing posterior to the medial malleolus in the tarsal tunnel. Close relationships with the tibia and fibula frame the vessel as it approaches the ankle, where it divides into the medial and lateral plantar arteries to supply the plantar foot. Bony landmarks including the distal tibia, distal fibula, talus, calcaneus, tarsals, metatarsals, and phalanges anchor the vascular map, while accompanying veins track alongside the arterial pathway and plantar branches. Red arteries and blue veins are rendered in clear contrast. Clinical relevance centers on the artery’s confined passage behind the medial malleolus, where it lies adjacent to the tibial nerve and the flexor tendons under the flexor retinaculum. Palpation of the posterior tibial pulse at this site remains a routine vascular exam for peripheral arterial disease, and the view also supports teaching of critical limb ischemia patterns in diabetes and atherosclerosis.
