Description
Beneath the semi-transparent skin of the male forehead and glabellar region, the procerus muscle is visualized as a thin, pyramidal slip arising from the nasal bones and upper lateral nasal cartilage and ascending superiorly to blend with the skin over the inferior frontal region. Medial to the superciliary arches, the corrugator supercilii lies deep to frontalis and orbicularis oculi, running superolaterally from the medial supraorbital margin toward the skin of the eyebrow, where its fibers interdigitate with the procerus at the midline. Portions of the frontalis (occipitofrontalis, frontal belly) may be seen superior to the brows, and lateral facial musculature in the temporal region is hinted in the background. Small muscle. Big expression. Functionally, the procerus acts with corrugator supercilii to draw the medial eyebrows inferiorly and medially, producing transverse wrinkles over the bridge of the nose and contributing to the characteristic glabellar pattern during frowning. That relationship matters in aesthetic medicine: botulinum toxin injection patterns for “glabellar lines” must distinguish procerus-driven horizontal creasing from corrugator-driven vertical furrows, and lateral spread risks unwanted brow ptosis via diffusion into frontalis. It also matters in regional flap planning and nasal dorsum procedures, where subcutaneous dissection over the radix can disrupt these small but expressive fibers.
