Description
Arising from the fascia over the nasal bones and the upper lateral nasal cartilages, the procerus muscle runs superiorly to insert into the skin of the glabella and lower forehead, where its fibers blend with the medial frontalis and corrugator supercilii. A lateral skull perspective places the procerus anterior to the frontal bone and nasal cavity, superficial to the nasion, with the nasal bones inferior to the frontal squama and the coronal and squamous sutures marking the cranial vault posteriorly. Red forehead fibers indicate the frontalis, while the procerus occupies the midline bridge of the nose just superior to the nasal root. Small muscle, big landmark. Functionally, procerus depresses the medial eyebrow and produces transverse rhytids over the nasal bridge, a pattern that helps differentiate glabellar complex activity from lateral frontalis-driven forehead lines.
