Description
Oriented from the lateral aspect of the male elbow, the radial collateral ligament (lateral collateral ligament complex) is highlighted in blue as it spans from the lateral epicondyle of the humerus toward the proximal radius and the annular ligament encircling the radial head. The ligament fans distally and slightly anteriorly across the radiocapitellar region, lying superficial to the capsule and lateral to the trochlear notch of the ulna. Bony landmarks likely visible include the capitulum, lateral epicondyle, radial head and neck, and the proximal ulna at the level of the supinator crest. Clear lateral anatomy. Clinically, this view maps directly to elbow varus stability and posterolateral rotatory stability, the failure pattern seen with lateral ulnar collateral ligament insufficiency after a fall on an outstretched hand or after iatrogenic injury during lateral approaches. The relationship to the radial head and annular ligament matters in radial head fracture, dislocation, and reconstruction scenarios, where preserving or repairing the lateral collateral ligament complex reduces recurrent instability.
