Description
Running along the acute (inferior) margin of the right ventricle, the right marginal vein courses superficially in the epicardial fat, typically paralleling the right marginal branch of the right coronary artery toward the coronary (atrioventricular) sulcus. Superiorly it approaches the small cardiac vein and the right atrium, with venous tributaries draining the anterolateral wall of the right ventricle. An anterior orientation also places the ascending aorta and proximal aortic arch superior and posterior to the right ventricular outflow tract, while the pulmonary trunk and its right and left pulmonary arteries lie anterior to the left atrium and superior to the ventricular mass. Coronary vessels are color-coded, helping separate arterial supply from venous drainage on the cardiac surface. For teaching coronary venous anatomy, this is the cleanest surface landmark for the right ventricular free wall. The right marginal vein becomes clinically relevant during coronary artery bypass grafting and right coronary interventions, where the right ventricular margin is exposed and epicardial veins can be mistaken for small arterial branches or inadvertently injured during dissection. Venous variants also matter for electrophysiology, since mapping and ablation near the right atrium and atrioventricular groove may encounter the small cardiac venous system. Use this rendering in gross anatomy and cardiovascular modules to pair the right marginal vein with the right coronary artery and to reinforce surface anatomy of the coronary sulci and margins. It also suits cardiothoracic surgery texts, interventional cardiology training materials, and patient-facing explanations of coronary circulation that include venous return pathways.
