Description
Seen from a posterior, slightly superior vantage, the paired cerebral hemispheres are rendered with clear gyri and sulci, with the sulcus intraparietalis (intraparietal sulcus) coursing obliquely across each parietal lobe. Superior to the intraparietal fissure lies the lobulus parietalis superior, while the lobulus parietalis inferior sits inferolateral to it, approaching the posterior aspects of the gyrus supramarginalis and gyrus angularis. The sulcus centralis is also identified, running roughly superoinferior and marking the posterior boundary of the frontal lobe and the anterior boundary of the parietal lobe. Inferiorly, the cerebellum occupies the posterior fossa, its folia forming tight, horizontal striations beneath the occipital poles. For cortical mapping, the intraparietal sulcus is a workhorse landmark because it segments association cortex involved in visuospatial attention, eye hand coordination, and numerical processing, and it helps orient you when teaching or interpreting parietal lobe syndromes. Lesions around the dominant inferior parietal lobule near the intraparietal region commonly contribute to elements of Gerstmann syndrome, while non-dominant parietal involvement can produce hemispatial neglect. Surgeons also reference these sulcal boundaries when planning approaches to parietal tumors or arteriovenous malformations and when correlating with functional MRI during awake mapping.
