Description
Posteriorly oriented cerebral hemispheres are rendered with the medial parieto-occipital sulcus (sulcus parietooccipitalis) identified as it descends on the medial surface toward the calcarine sulcus, separating the precuneus of the parietal lobe superiorly from the cuneus of the occipital lobe inferiorly. The interhemispheric (longitudinal) fissure lies in the midline, and the occipital poles sit most posterior, lateral to the sulcal boundary. Inferior to the cerebrum, the cerebellar hemispheres and vermis are visible beneath the tentorial plane. Orientation is clear. For neuroanatomy teaching, the parietooccipital fissure is the most reliable surface landmark for the parietal-occipital lobe boundary, and this posterior perspective helps you relate medial sulci to what is seen on mid-sagittal MRI and to craniotomy planning in the parieto-occipital region. Lesions near the cuneus and calcarine cortex correlate with contralateral homonymous visual field deficits, while pathology extending superiorly into the precuneus can disrupt visuospatial processing and attention networks. Surgeons also use the parietooccipital sulcus as a cortical reference when approaching deep parietal or occipital targets while avoiding primary visual cortex along the calcarine sulcus. Common use includes atlases and slide decks for gross neuroanatomy, neuroradiology correlation modules (midline sagittal anatomy), and neurosurgical education on interhemispheric and parieto-occipital approaches, with enough sulcal detail to support labeling exercises and exam figures.
