Description
Arising on the medial surface and reaching the superomedial margin, the sulcus parietooccipitalis is carried onto the lateral aspect as a short but reliable landmark separating the posterior parietal cortex from the occipital lobe. Superiorly it approaches the longitudinal fissure, and inferiorly it trends toward the region of the cuneus and precuneus on the medial wall, even if those medial gyri are only implied from a lateral perspective. Surrounding cortical relief includes adjacent parietal and occipital gyri, with the cerebellar hemispheres and vermis positioned posteroinferior to the cerebrum and the brainstem descending inferiorly from the diencephalic region. A clean boundary groove. That parietooccipital sulcus matters because it anchors lobe identification when other lateral sulci vary, and it helps you orient the posterior cerebral territory relative to the calcarine sulcus and primary visual cortex (V1) on the medial occipital surface. In stroke teaching, it supports clinicoradiologic correlation for posterior cerebral artery infarcts producing contralateral homonymous hemianopia, where students often confuse parietal association cortex with occipital visual cortex.
