Description
Centered in the long mid-back region, the thoracic vertebrae (T1 to T12) are highlighted in blue along the vertebral column of an adult female skeleton in anatomical position. Superiorly, T1 sits just inferior to C7 at the cervicothoracic junction, and inferiorly T12 transitions to L1 at the thoracolumbar junction. Laterally, each thoracic vertebra articulates with the ribs via the costovertebral and costotransverse joints, while posterior spinous processes slope inferiorly and overlap in the upper and mid-thoracic levels. Surrounding skeletal landmarks remain visible for orientation, including the skull, clavicles and scapulae, the rib cage and sternum, the pelvis, and the long bones of the upper and lower limbs. Blue emphasis on the thoracic spine matters because this segment behaves differently from the cervical and lumbar regions: the rib cage limits flexion and extension but makes rotational mechanics and deformity patterns clinically distinct. Vertebral body compression fractures from osteoporosis commonly cluster at the thoracolumbar junction (often T12 and L1), while hyperkyphosis and Scheuermann-type wedging are typically assessed by tracing thoracic vertebral endplates and sagittal alignment. Pedicle and transverse process anatomy in the thoracic region also frames safe corridors for posterior instrumentation and helps explain why thoracic disc herniations, though less frequent, can produce myelopathic symptoms within the relatively narrow spinal canal.
