Description
Posterior anatomy of an adult female skeleton is rendered with the vertebral column accentuated, running in the midline from the occiput and foramen magnum superiorly to the sacrum and coccyx inferiorly within the pelvic ring. In the cervical region, the atlas (C1) and axis (C2) sit immediately inferior to the skull, continuing caudally through the thoracic vertebrae that articulate laterally with the ribs at the costovertebral and costotransverse joints. Lumbar vertebrae enlarge inferiorly and meet the sacrum at the lumbosacral junction, with the iliac crests positioned laterally and the scapulae and rib cage framing the thoracic spine. Posterior orientation makes vertebral alignment and regional curvature easy to judge, which is why this view is routinely used when teaching spinal levels and deformity patterns. Coronal plane deviation of the spinous process line is the basic visual cue for scoliosis, while the thoracic cage helps explain why thoracic fractures and kyphotic collapse have different mechanics than lumbar injuries. Palpable landmarks matter here. The line between the iliac crests approximates L4, a common reference point for lumbar puncture or spinal anesthesia, and the sacral hiatus provides context for caudal epidural access.
