Description
Centered in anatomical position, the female axial skeleton is presented with the skull superiorly, the thoracic cage encircling the mid-trunk, and the pelvic girdle inferiorly supporting the vertebral column. Cervical vertebrae lie posterior to the pharyngeal airway and stack above the thoracic vertebrae, which articulate laterally with the ribs and posteriorly with the sternum via costal cartilages. A blue highlight isolates a segment of the thoracic spine, positioned posterior to the heart and lungs and superior to the lumbar vertebrae, ending above the sacrum that is wedged between the iliac bones. Upper and lower limb long bones extend laterally from the shoulder girdles and inferiorly from the pelvis, providing full-body skeletal context around the spine. Emphasizing thoracic vertebrae is clinically practical because this region carries the rib-bearing constraints that influence deformity patterns and fracture mechanics, and it is a common site for osteoporotic wedge compression fractures and traumatic burst injuries. Kyphosis, scoliosis apex location, and pedicle morphology are taught most clearly when the thoracic segment is seen in continuity with the cervical and lumbar curves, so you can relate segmental alignment to the sternum, ribs, and pelvis. Landmarks matter here. Counting levels for procedures (thoracic epidural, paravertebral block, posterior instrumentation) depends on reliable thoracic vertebral identification.
