Description
Posterior anatomy frames the female lumbar spine with L1 through L5 highlighted against the rest of the skeleton. Superiorly, the lumbar vertebrae transition at the thoracolumbar junction just inferior to T12 and the lowest ribs, and inferiorly they meet the sacrum at the lumbosacral angle. From this rear perspective, the midline spinous processes align over the vertebral arches while the transverse processes project laterally toward the posterior iliac crests, situating the lumbar column between the rib cage above and the pelvic ring below. Posterior views matter when you are teaching how load transfer and motion are controlled by the neural arch, facet (zygapophysial) joints, and pars interarticularis rather than by the vertebral bodies alone. That distinction maps directly to common pathology: isthmic spondylolisthesis most often involves a pars defect at L5 with anterior slip on S1, and the posterior elements also define the bony corridor for decompressive laminectomy in lumbar spinal stenosis. The lumbar segments also serve as dependable surface landmarks, with the intercristal line (between the iliac crests) approximating the L4 spinous process in many adults. Clear landmarks.
