Description
Positioned on the posterior compartment of the upper arm, the triceps brachii is presented in lateral profile with its long, lateral, and medial heads converging inferiorly toward a common tendon. Superiorly, the long head tracks proximally along the posteromedial humerus toward its origin on the infraglenoid tubercle of the scapula, while the lateral and medial heads occupy the posterior and posterolateral surfaces of the humeral shaft. Anterior to the triceps mass, the biceps brachii is visible along the anterior arm, and the deltoid caps the shoulder laterally, framing the transition into the elbow region where the tendon courses to the olecranon of the ulna. Lateral views like this clarify what students often miss in anterior arm diagrams: the medial head contributes substantially to elbow extension even though it hides deep to the long and lateral heads along most of the arm. It also maps cleanly onto common clinical landmarks, including the triangular interval (between teres major, long head of triceps, and humerus) where the radial nerve and profunda brachii artery pass onto the posterior humerus, a relationship that matters in humeral shaft fractures and posterior surgical approaches.
