Description
Across the anterior neck and thorax, the superficial and deep lymphatic vessels form a branching network that converges toward the venous angles at the junction of the internal jugular and subclavian veins. Cervical lymph nodes cluster along the jugular chain, while axillary nodes sit lateral to the pectoral region and receive lymphatics from the upper limb and anterior thoracic wall. In the mediastinum, the thymus lies anterior to the great vessels, and in the left upper quadrant the spleen rests posterolateral to the stomach, with lymphatic channels tracking along major vascular routes. Green lymphatic trunks suggest the course of the thoracic duct ascending to the left venous angle, with a shorter right lymphatic duct expected on the right. Pediatric lymphatic anatomy is not just a scaled-down adult map. The thymus is proportionally larger in a male child and remains a dominant anterior mediastinal structure, a point that matters when interpreting chest radiographs or planning sternotomy and central venous access where the thoracic duct and lymphatic trunks can be injured. Palpable lymphadenopathy in the cervical or axillary regions is a daily clinical problem in children, and this layout helps differentiate typical drainage patterns from red-flag distributions seen with lymphoma, atypical mycobacterial infection, or metastatic spread from head and neck primaries.
