Description
Sagittal sectioning through the tongue captures the stratified squamous epithelium overlying a lingual papilla, with an ovoid taste bud embedded within the epithelium and opening to the surface at a small taste pore. Elongated gustatory receptor cells and supporting cells converge apically, while basal cells cluster toward the deep pole of the bud. Beneath the mucosa, bundles of intrinsic skeletal muscle run in intersecting planes, separated by connective tissue septa and small neurovascular channels that course superiorly toward the papillary core. Orientation matters here because the taste bud is an epithelial sensory organ supplied by afferent fibers that must traverse the lamina propria to synapse on receptor cells, and disruption at that interface explains common clinical complaints after oral surgery. Lingual nerve injury during mandibular third molar extraction can reduce general sensation to the anterior two thirds of the tongue, while chorda tympani involvement alters taste and salivary reflexes, a distinction that becomes clearer when you can trace how the bud sits superficially but depends on deeper neural input. Gustatory dysfunction also follows glossitis, chemotherapy, and radiation, where epithelial turnover and basal cell integrity determine recovery. Small structure, real consequences.
