Description
Positioned on the superior pole of a likely left kidney, the suprarenal (adrenal) gland appears flattened and triangular, separated from the renal capsule by a thin layer of perirenal fat in vivo. A sagittal cross section through the gland distinguishes cortex from medulla, with the cortex forming the peripheral rim and the medulla occupying the central core. Inferior to it, the renal parenchyma shows the outer cortex surrounding deeper medulla, converging toward the medial renal hilum where the renal pelvis continues as the ureter. Relationships are clear: adrenal superior, kidney inferior, hilum medial. Endocrine and urinary anatomy meet at this interface, and that matters in daily practice. On CT and MRI, adrenal lesions are localized by their position on the superior renal pole and by internal architecture; cortical adenoma, adrenal hemorrhage, and pheochromocytoma are all assessed in terms of their relationship to the kidney and nearby hilar structures. Surgeons also rely on this spatial logic during adrenalectomy or nephrectomy, where early identification of the suprarenal plane helps avoid capsular violation and reduces the risk of bleeding from short suprarenal vessels.
