Description
Viewed from the lateral aspect of an adult male trunk, the external oblique (musculus obliquus externus abdominis) occupies the anterolateral abdominal wall, its fibers running inferomedially from the lower ribs toward the linea alba and iliac crest. Superiorly, digitations along ribs 5 to 12 interdigitate with the serratus anterior on the lateral thoracic wall, while the thoracolumbar fascia and latissimus dorsi lie more posterior. Inferiorly, the external oblique aponeurosis contributes to the inguinal ligament between the anterior superior iliac spine and pubic tubercle, with the internal oblique positioned deep to it. This lateral perspective matters because it clarifies how the rib-based serrations of the external oblique blend visually and functionally with adjacent chest wall musculature, a point that often confuses learners when separating external oblique from serratus anterior during palpation or dissection.
