Description

Running obliquely across the anterolateral abdominal wall, the external oblique (musculus obliquus externus abdominis) appears just deep to the subcutaneous fat, its fibers coursing inferomedially from the lateral ribs toward the anterior midline. Superiorly, the muscle slips arise from the external surfaces of ribs 5 through 12, interdigitating laterally with serratus anterior, while inferiorly the muscular belly transitions into a broad aponeurosis. Medially, that aponeurosis contributes to the anterior layer of the rectus sheath and the linea alba, and inferomedially it thickens as the inguinal ligament spanning from the anterior superior iliac spine to the pubic tubercle. Rib contours and portions of the thoracic cage remain visible deep to the muscle, clarifying its relationship to the costal margin and upper abdominal wall. Fiber direction matters. Because the external oblique forms the most superficial of the flat abdominal muscles, this near-skin view is a clean teaching reference for how force is transmitted into the rectus sheath and inguinal region during trunk rotation and abdominal pressurization.
