Description
Spanning the lateral thoracoabdominal wall, the external oblique muscles (musculus obliquus externus abdominis) are presented bilaterally from their serrated costal digitations on ribs 5 through 12 down to the iliac crest and the broad anterior aponeurosis. Inferomedially, the fibers course in a classic hands-in-pockets direction toward the linea alba, while the thickened inferior border rolls into the inguinal ligament between the anterior superior iliac spine and pubic tubercle. Deep to the superficial muscle layer, the rib cage, sternum, thoracic and lumbar vertebrae, and the superior pelvis provide clear bony reference points for origin, attachment, and surface contour. Clinically, the inferior margin of the external oblique is more than a silhouette, it forms the superior boundary of the femoral triangle region and defines the floor of the inguinal canal through its aponeurosis, including the superficial inguinal ring.
