Running deep in the anterior thigh, the external iliac artery passes beneath the inguinal ligament to become the femoral artery, then descends distally toward the adductor hiatus before continuing as the popliteal artery posterior to the knee. A lateral perspective clarifies its relationship to the femoral vein, which typically lies medial and slightly posterior in the femoral triangle before shifting position distally as the pair enter the adductor canal. Distal to the knee, the arterial tree divides into the anterior tibial artery coursing anterolaterally toward the dorsum of the foot and the posterior tibial artery running in the deep posterior compartment toward the plantar circulation, with venae comitantes tracking alongside.
