Description
Seen from the lateral aspect in an adult male, the femoral artery is traced along the anteromedial thigh before giving rise to the deep femoral artery (profunda femoris), which turns posteriorly and dives deep to the adductor compartment. Proximal branches consistent with the medial and lateral circumflex femoral arteries are suggested near the femoral triangle, while perforating arteries course posteriorly toward the hamstring group. Distally, the superficial femoral artery continues through the adductor hiatus to become the popliteal artery behind the knee, with paired deep veins running alongside the arterial trunks. Clean landmarks. Orientation from the side matters because it makes the profunda’s depth and posterior trajectory obvious, a relationship that is easy to lose in anterior diagrams. Surgeons and interventionalists rely on this anatomy when planning common femoral access and when managing profunda femoris injury after penetrating trauma or femoral fractures, where a perforating branch can retract into the posterior compartment and bleed briskly. The circumflex system also frames the vascular basis of femoral head perfusion, with clinical relevance in hip surgery and avascular necrosis risk when proximal branches are compromised.
