Description
Arising from the femoral artery just inferior to the inguinal ligament, the profunda femoris (deep femoral) artery is shown branching posterolaterally and then coursing deep to the adductor longus along the medial aspect of the proximal thigh. Medial to the femoral shaft, its perforating branches pass posteriorly through adductor magnus toward the posterior compartment, while circumflex contributions to the hip region are implied proximal to the first perforator. Parallel blue vessels track the same corridor, with the femoral vein lying medial and posterior to the femoral artery in the femoral triangle before the deep venous tributaries accompany profunda branches. Small arterioles and venules fill out the network. Clean, surgical anatomy. A medial perspective matters because it clarifies how the profunda femoris quickly leaves the femoral neurovascular bundle and becomes the dominant supply to the thigh, a relationship that often confuses learners who only memorize the femoral artery’s superficial course.
