Arising from the femoral artery in the proximal anterior thigh, the deep femoral (profunda femoris) artery is highlighted just distal to the inguinal region, where the vessel lies medial to the femur and quickly courses posteriorly toward the adductor compartment. Its early branches, classically the medial and lateral circumflex femoral arteries, arc around the proximal femur, while the perforating arteries pass posterolaterally through adductor magnus to reach the posterior thigh. Superficial and deep venous counterparts appear in blue, with the great saphenous vein tracking along the anteromedial leg to the saphenofemoral junction and the femoral vein running deep and medial to the femoral artery in the femoral triangle. Color separation keeps arteries and veins unambiguous. For clinical anatomy, the profunda femoris is the workhorse collateral channel when the superficial femoral artery is stenosed or occluded, and its perforators explain why thigh hematomas can be deep and extensive after trauma or iatrogenic injury. An anterior view also maps cleanly onto common access and exposure corridors in the groin: femoral arterial puncture, endarterectomy, and proximal control during vascular repair rely on understanding where the profunda branches relative to the femoral head and the saphenofemoral junction. Misidentifying the profunda for the superficial femoral artery is a known pitfall in angiography and duplex scanning.
