Description
Running from the external iliac artery beneath the inguinal ligament, the femoral artery is traced in anterior aspect as it descends through the femoral triangle and along the anteromedial thigh toward the adductor hiatus. Medial to the femoral nerve and lateral to the femoral vein at the level of the femoral canal, the vessel’s proximal course is read against the pelvis and femur, then continued distally to the popliteal artery posterior to the knee. Surrounding bony landmarks, including the pelvis, femur, patella, tibia, fibula, and the bones of the foot, provide a fixed scaffold for appreciating vessel trajectory. Color coding separates arteries (red) from accompanying veins (blue). Anterior visualization of the femoral artery matters because this segment is palpated, cannulated, compressed, and sometimes injured. Common femoral arterial access for coronary and peripheral interventions targets the vessel just inferior to the inguinal ligament over the femoral head, while avoiding a high puncture that risks retroperitoneal hemorrhage and a low puncture that increases pseudoaneurysm rates near the profunda femoris bifurcation. Surface anatomy also comes into focus: in the mid-thigh the arterial pulse becomes harder to appreciate as the artery dives deeper in the adductor canal. Compression here is unreliable.
