Description
Running just inferior to the inguinal ligament, the external iliac artery continues as the femoral artery as it enters the femoral triangle, positioned anteromedial in the proximal thigh and descending toward the adductor canal. Medial to the vessel, the great saphenous vein tracks superficially along the medial leg before draining into the femoral vein at the saphenofemoral junction. Bony landmarks frame the course in anterior view, with the pubis and ilium superiorly, the femur centrally, and the patella, tibia, and fibula aligned distally to orient proximal to distal flow to the leg and foot. Red arterial channels extend beyond the knee into the leg and dorsum of the foot, contrasted against blue venous return. Understanding this anterior relationship is practical in the groin. Common femoral artery puncture for cardiac catheterization targets the segment over the femoral head, below the inguinal ligament, where compression is effective and the risk of retroperitoneal hemorrhage is reduced compared with a high stick. The femoral triangle also matters in trauma and vascular surgery, where control of the common femoral artery and its bifurcation into the superficial femoral and profunda femoris arteries determines limb perfusion and guides exposure between sartorius and adductor longus. Clear landmarks. Few forgive imprecision.
