Description
Running anteroinferiorly from the profunda femoris artery, the lateral femoral circumflex artery is traced from its origin near the femoral triangle as it curves laterally across the proximal thigh. A medial viewpoint places the femoral artery and femoral vein in the foreground, with the circumflex vessel passing deep to sartorius and rectus femoris toward the lateral aspect of the femur. Proximal branches are suggested along its course, consistent with ascending and descending pathways that skirt the anterior border of gluteus medius superiorly and approach the vastus lateralis distally. Red arterial channels contrast with accompanying blue venous pathways. This angle matters because it clarifies where the lateral femoral circumflex artery begins before disappearing into the anterior compartment, a frequent point of confusion when learners try to separate it from the medial femoral circumflex artery and the superficial femoral artery. Surgeons encounter its branches during the direct anterior approach to the hip and in anterolateral thigh dissection, where the ascending branch can bleed briskly and the descending branch participates in the periarticular anastomoses around the knee. Clean landmarks. The vessel’s relationship to the femur and quadriceps also supports flap planning, since the descending branch is the dominant pedicle for the anterolateral thigh (ALT) flap. Ideal use cases include gross anatomy teaching of the femoral triangle and profunda femoris branches, surgical atlases illustrating hip exposure and hemostasis, and interventional radiology or orthopedic publications discussing lateral thigh perfusion and periarticular collateral circulation.
