Description
Seen in lateral profile, the depressor labii inferioris occupies the anterolateral chin, arising from the oblique line of the mandible and ascending to blend with the lower lip deep to the orbicularis oris. Its fibers sit medial to the depressor anguli oris and anterior to the masseter, with the mentalis positioned more medially at the chin midline and the platysma draping inferiorly over the mandibular border into the anterior neck. Posteriorly, the temporalis and masseter frame the ramus and angle of the mandible, while the auricle and adjacent mastoid region establish the lateral craniofacial landmarks. Functionally, this angle clarifies the muscle’s vector on the lower lip: it pulls the vermilion and lower lip downward and slightly laterally rather than straight inferiorly, an action that becomes obvious when compared with the midline lift and pout produced by mentalis. That distinction matters when planning perioral reconstruction, chemodenervation, or evaluating iatrogenic asymmetry after mandibular or submental procedures, where marginal mandibular branch (CN VII) weakness can mimic or unmask depressor labii inferioris imbalance.
