Description
Semi-transparent skin on the right hemiface exposes the depressor labii inferioris in its expected position on the anterolateral chin, arising from the oblique line of the mandible and running superiorly to blend with the lower lip musculature. Fibers lie lateral to depressor anguli oris and superficial to the mandibular body, while the orbicularis oris forms the more medial, circular sphincter around the oral fissure. Superior and lateral, portions of the zygomaticus major and minor and the buccinator region are suggested beneath the cheek, with the modiolus acting as the lateral convergence point for perioral muscles. A true depth cue. Depressor labii inferioris is the workhorse for unilateral lower lip depression and eversion, so this side-oriented, under-skin presentation supports teaching of asymmetry at rest and with facial animation. Clinically, it is the muscle most often implicated when the marginal mandibular branch of the facial nerve is injured during submandibular gland surgery, parotidectomy, facelift incisions, or mandibular angle approaches, producing an ipsilateral lower lip droop that can be confused with central facial weakness. Its close relationship to the mandible and platysma plane also makes it a frequent target in aesthetic botulinum toxin injections for lower face imbalance, where over-treatment can exaggerate lower lip incompetence. Facial anatomy modules in gross anatomy and head and neck courses can pair this rendering with surface landmarks to correlate mandibular borders, beard-bearing skin, and the perioral muscular sling. It also fits well in operative anatomy texts and patient-education materials discussing marginal mandibular nerve risk and expected postoperative lower lip motion changes.
